Serenoa Serrulata. Saw Palmetto Is Proven In Many Cases To Be As Effective In Treating Prostate Disease As Traditional Medications Without The Harmful Side Effects.

Serenoa Serrulata. Saw Palmetto Is Proven In Many Cases To Be As Effective In Treating Prostate Disease As Traditional Medications Without The Harmful Side Effects. More commonly known as Saw Palmetto, it’s nature’s answer to male reproductive problems. Also called serenoa repens or simply sabal, this American dwarf palm tree is native to the coastal regions of South Carolina to Florida in the Eastern United States, although it is currently being naturalized in other areas of the world.

Named after the saw like teeth that form its bony stems, this relatively large plant can reach heights of up to 10 feet in ideal climates. The saw palmetto bears fragrant ivory coloured flowers and yellowish berries resembling olives. When ripe, saw palmetto berries turn black, signalling harvesters they are ready to pick. The berries are then dried and ground into a powder from which liposterol, a fat-soluble steroid thought to contain the plant’s medicinal properties, is removed.

Serenoa Serrulata has long been used by Native Americans as a natural remedy for treating a variety of male conditions including impotence, inflammation and infertility. By the late 19th Century, saw palmetto’s beneficial effects on the genitourinary tract were generally recognised. In fact, up until the 1950s, serenoa was also widely used as a treatment for enlarged prostate, gonorrheae, cystitis and conditions affecting the sensitive mucous membranes. Today, Germany’s Commission E still recognises saw palmetto as the first-line treatment in 95 percent of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate) cases.

Serenoa Serrulata: The therapeutic benefits of saw palmettoare likely attributed to liposterol, which researchers claim reduces the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a particular form of testosterone known to bind to the androgen cells responsible for prostate growth. Saw Palmetto berries also contain high-molecular-weight polysaccharides, known to have anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulant properties.

One international study gave 1,098 patients suffering from BPH either a commercial saw palmetto extract called Permixon® or Proscar® (finasteride), the widely accepted conventional drug treatment for BPH. While results show both treatments relieve symptoms of BPH in 67 percent of all patients, those receiving the serenoa did not endure side effects such as decreased libido and impotence like those using the conventional drug. Researchers conclude saw palmetto is just as effective as drug therapy in treating symptoms of BPH, without the unwanted side effects.

Another significant German study shows men taking 160mg of saw palmetto extract twice daily over three years, experienced a 73 percent reduction in night-time urination and significant improvements in urinary flow. Research further concludes because of its anti-spasmodic properties, serenoa may improve bladder conditions such as urinary urgency. Saw palmetto’s actions have been compared to such drugs as Hytrin® which eases the muscles of the sphincter, alleviating pressure and the need the to urinate.

Serenoa Serrulata: Saw palmetto extract must contain 85-95 percent fatty acids and sterols for maximum therapeutic effectiveness. It can be purchased as a tincture, capsule, tablet, softgel or dried herb. For early-stage BPH the recommended dosage is 160 mg twice daily for at least 30 days. When used in combination with other known herbal remedies such as pumpkin seed, epilobium, flaxseeds and lycopene, saw palmetto can a very effective and powerful remedy for symptoms of BPH.
