As men reach middle age, they should become aware that their bodies are in for some natural changes – some of which are more disconcerting than others. It is only recently that men are becoming better informed about BPH, or Benign Prostatic Hyperlasia, which is an enlargement of the prostate.
The enlargement of the prostate can vary in degrees from hardly noticeable to symptoms that are quite painful. These symptoms include difficulty urinating, meaning that the patient will have trouble beginning to urinate or have the urge to urinate and cannot; frequent urination, thanks to the enlarged prostate blocking or restricting the flow, leaving the patient feeling as though he must urinate all the time; and painful urination, according to some patients who have found urination to be painful or to include a burning sensation once urination has started.
The good news is that BPH is not usually associated with prostate cancer and only an estimated twenty-five percent of patients with BPH will require surgery for relief . In fact, this enlargement is considered to be a perfectly normal part of the aging process. However, those that wish to be proactive and work towards preventing or slowing down the enlargement process will be pleased to know that research has shown that it is indeed possible.
Recent research has shown that the best way to prevent or slow down BPH is to eat a well balanced, low-fat diet . There are also supplements, such as saw palmetto , that may also help prevent or slow the growth. If the symptoms of BPH are already present, the Australian Department of Health and Aging recommends pelvic exercises, avoiding caffeine and restricting fluids in the evening in addition to diet and supplements.
While it is true that some of the symptoms of BPH are difficult to live with, it can be something of a relief to know that they are considered to be a normal part of the aging process. As men reach middle age, it is especially important to lead a healthy lifestyle and continue their regular examinations in order to make sure their BPH is well managed.
