Studies have shown that men can toss some tomatoes at prostate health problems.

Just as they can be a weapon in dismissing poor actors from a stage, tomatoes can be used to dismiss prostate problems. Specifically, it’s a certain part of a tomato and other foods along this line. Some tests show that eating cooked tomatoes can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer with dramatic results. The part of a tomato that is the hero in this battle to prevent prostate cancer is lycopene.

Lycopene is also a major player in the battle against cancer, generally speaking. But when it comes to fighting prostate cancer, lycopene has really shined brightly.

In a clinical trial of 47,000 men, there was a 16 per cent reduction of prostate cancer in participants who consumed large amounts of tomatoes. The reduction was as high as 23 percent if their menu included two servings of tomato sauce in a week. Even more studies have concluded that instances of prostate cancer development were reduced by 57 per cent in men who had elevated levels of lycopene in their blood stream.

Although the book is still out on studies of lycopene in men who already had prostate problems when they started testing, there is still proof that this ingredient is a powerful preventative. While tomatoes and tomato sauce are the favoured forms of getting lycopene, there are other choices. Apricots, pink grapefruit and watermelon also have huge amounts of lycopene. Tomatoes are picked over these nutritious cousins because lycopene levels have been shown to rise when foods are warmed or cooked.

Even though there is no cure-all for preventing prostate problems, there is plenty of evidence that what one eats can go along way in keeping a healthy prostate. If a man is concerned about developing problems with his prostate, throwing some tomatoes at the problem may be the solution!
