Prostate cancer statistics from Australia show the need for early detection and prevention is quite high.

A look at prostate cancer statistics in Australia quickly reveals a strong need for people to pay attention to prevention measures and seek the right testing for early detection. The number of prostate cancer related deaths is as high as the figures related to breast cancer deaths in women. Considering this, there is no denying the need for preventative measures, regular examination and early detection and treatment.

At present, nearly 3,000 Australian men die due to prostate cancer on an annual basis. Australia's annual diagnosis rate is around 12,000. Although this is just a fraction of the country's total population, the numbers are too high for those involved. This is especially so when the facts about prostate cancer are looked at more closely. This disease is often very preventable and at the least quite treatable when caught early.

Men can take steps to help themselves avoid prostate problems, including enlarged prostate conditions and cancer. Regular examinations, starting at certain ages, and other preventative techniques can go a very long way. Men who have a family history of prostate cancer will likely want to submit to annual tests starting around the age of 40. Those with no history or major risk factors will find that regular testing will begin around the age of 50. Standard test procedures include a simple blood test, known as the Prostate Specific Antigen test, and a Digital Rectal Examination. For prevention, a healthy diet rich in substances like lycopene can go a long way.

Submitting to annual exams is not something most men relish. The reality is that waiting for problems to arise, however, is often too late. Should symptoms of prostate trouble present, it's time to seek out medical advice. Pay attention to symptoms, such as troubled urination or discoloured or bloody urine. In many cases, cancer is not the cause, but other, much less ominous conditions such as enlargement.

The good news is that prostate cancer is often very treatable should detection take place during the early states. If cancer is contained to the prostate gland itself, survival rates are strong. When the numbers are examined, it is clear that prevention, examination and action are all needed. If the three combine, lives can be saved.
