Medical trials show that men can throw tomatoes at prostate health concerns.
Just as they can be used to boo bad actors off a stage, tomatoes can also be used to ward off prostate problems. More correctly, it’s a certain component of a tomato and other similar foods. Some studies have shown that cooked tomato intake can dramatically reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. This special component that works like a charm in preventing prostate cancer is lycopene.
Lycopene is showing itself quite a champion in the fight against other forms of cancer as well. But when it comes to prostate cancer, lycopene has impressive results.
In a recent study of 47,000 men, there was a 16 per cent decrease of prostate cancer in men who ate a lot of tomatoes. This decrease went up to 23 per cent if their diet included two servings of tomato sauce per week. Still other studies show decreases up to 57 per cent in the rate of prostate cancer development in men who showed high levels of lycopene in their blood.
Even though studies of lycopene in men who came into the testing with prostate problems have sketchy results, evidence is still proving that this nutrient works as a preventative. Even though tomato sauce and tomatoes are most commonly used to get lycopene, there are more options. Watermelon, pink grapefruit and apricots are other foods with high levels of lycopene. Tomatoes are often chosen over these other foods because lycopene levels seem to increase when these foods are heated or cooked.
While there is no absolute preventative for prostate problems, there are plenty of indicators to suggest one’s diet can play a major role in warding off prostate problems. If there are concerns about developing prostate problems, just throw some tomatoes into your diet!
