Men who make it through an annual prostate examination or two without incident might be tempted to think they are out of the woods. The facts of prostate health, however, show that this is precisely the time to ensure that a good preventative programme is put into action.
As men age, they are more likely to develop a variety of prostate conditions. The incident of benign prostatic hyperplasia, for example, seems to coincide with age. Estimates show that about 80 per cent of men will experience the symptoms of this prostate enlarging condition if they reach the age of 80 .
The prospects for developing prostate cancer also rise with age. A man at the age of 40, for example, has about a 1 in 1,000 chance of developing this disease. By the time a man reaches the age of 70, that chance rises to 80 in 1,000.
While enjoying a clean annual prostate examination is a reason for celebration, it is not the time for letting one's guard down. Preventative measures should come into play, if they haven't already.
If men want to increase their chances of beating the odds, there are some very simple actions they can take. The use of supplements, for example, has proven very beneficial for some men in preventing a host of prostate-related conditions. Supplements that contain ingredients, such as lycopene and pumpkin seeds can help on the preventative front. Minerals like selenium and zinc can also help. Diet, exercise and overall healthful living has also proven helpful toward prevention.
Men who go for their annual prostate examination and think they are doing all they can to prevent problems, should take a look at the figures. There is no reason to watch and wait when action can produce results. There is much more to protecting prostate health than reporting for an annual exam.
